Texas DOT number - Call us at (765) 742-2610 for a Texas DOT number. For business equipment owners with vans, trucks, semis, coaches, buses or tow trucks - if you operate inside Texas, do you need to register for Texas DOT and get a USDOT number?  If you also cross state lines, in addition to Texas DOT and a USDOT number, do you need MC Authority and UCR - Unified Carrier Registration?  There is a $300 minimum fine for failing to register for UCR when crossing state lines. Below are the Texas DOT number, MC Authority, USDOT and UCR registration requirements for Private Carriers and For-Hire Carriers.

Texas DOT number for commercial vehicles: When you haul items, products or loads inside Texas without crossing state lines with these loads with a truck, truck and trailer, or semi-tractor and trailer, or use a tow truck, or transport passengers in a passenger vehicle or motor coach, you may be required to register with the state for a Texas DOT Certificate.  This Texas DOT Certificate is commonly refered to as Texas DOT. If you are a Private Carrier, For-Hire Carrier, Motor Coach operator or use a tow truck, check below to see if you are required to register with the state.

Texas DOT number Requirements: Private and For-Hire Carriers

  • Private Carriers hauling their own products within the state of Texas with vehicles up to 26,000-lbs: Texas DOT number not required. As a Private Carrier, if you have a van, pickup truck, pickup truck and trailer, or a straight truck, or a straight truck and trailer with either a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000-lbs or under for the power unit, or with the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings (CGVWR) of 26,000-lbs or under of both the power unit and the trailer, and haul products or loads exclusively within the state of Texas without leaving the state, you are not required to register for a USDOT number, or for a Texas DOT certificate, also referred to as Texas DOT number.
  • Private Carriers hauling their own products within the state of Texas with vehicles 26,001-lbs and heavier: Texas DOT number required. As a Private Carrier, if you have a straight truck, straight truck with trailer or a semi-tractor and trailer with either a GVWR of 26,001-lbs or greater for the power unit, or with CGWR of 26,001-lbs or greater for both the power unit and trailer, and you haul loads within the state of Texas without crossing state lines with these loads, you are required to register for a USDOT number and with the state for a Texas DOT Certificate, commonly refered to as a Texas DOT number.   
  • For-Hire Carriers hauling products or loads within the state of Texas with vehicles up to 26,000-lbs: Texas DOT number is not required. If you are For-Hire and get paid to haul loads inside the state of Texas without crossing state lines with these loads and you are moving these items, products or loads with a van, pickup truck, pickup truck and trailer, straight truck, or with a straight truck and trailer with aGVWR of 26,000-lbs or under with a power unit, or CGVWR of 26,000-lbs or under with both a power unit and trailer, you are not required to register for a USDOT number, or register with the state of Texas for a Texas DOT Certificate, commonly refered to as Texas DOT number.
  • For-Hire Carriers hauling loads within the state of Texas with vehicles 26,001-lbs or heavier:   Texas DOT number required.  If you are For-Hire and get paid to haul loads inside the state of Texas without crossing state lines with these loads and you are moving these loads in a straight truck, straight truck and trailer, or a semi-tractor and trailer where the GVWR is 26,001-lbs or more with a power unit, or the CGWR is 26,001-lbs or more with a power unit and trailer, you are required to register for a USDOT number and with the state of Texas for a Texas DOT Certificate, commonly referred to on the internet as Texas DOT number 
  • Private Carriers hauling their own items, products, loads within the state of Texas, and also crossing state lines with their own items, products, loads, and weighing 10,000-lbs or less: Texas DOT number not required. As a Private Carrier with a van, pickup truck, pickup truck and trailer, straight truck, straight truck and trailer with a GVWR of 10,000-lbs or less hauling items, products, loads within the state of Texas, and across state lines, you will not need a USDOT number. You will also not need to register with the state of Texas for a Texas DOT certificate, commonly known as Texas DOT number.
  • Private Carriers hauling their own items, products, loads within the state of Texas, and also crossing state lines with items, products, loads, and weighing between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs: Texas DOT  number not required. If you are a Private Carrier hauling your own items, products, loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with items, products, loads, where the power unit has a GVWR of 10,000-lbs or under, but the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings of both the power unit and trailer are between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs, you will need to register for a USDOT number but not for the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) process for crossing state lines as the power unit has a GVWR of 10,000-lbs or under. You will not need to register with the state of Texas for a Texas DOT Certificate, commonly referred to as Texas DOT number.
  • Private Carriers hauling their own items, products, loads within the state of Texas, and also crossing state lines with items, products, loads, and weighing between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs: Texas DOT number not required. If you are a Private Carrier hauling your own items, products, loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with items, products, loads, with a GVWR between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs for a single unit, or the power unit has a GVWR of 10,001-lbs or more but the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings of both the power unit and trailer do not exceed 26,000-lbs, you will need to register for a USDOT number and for the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) process for crossing state lines as the power unit has a GVWR of 10,001-lbs or more. But you will not need to register with the state of Texas for a Texas DOT Certificate, commonly referred to as Texas DOT number.
  • Private Carriers hauling their own products within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with loads and weighing 26,001-lbs or more: Texas DOT number required. If you are a Private Carrier with a straight truck, straight truck and trailer, or a semi-tractor and trailer hauling loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with loads, and weighing 26,001-lbs or more either with a truck, or with a truck pulling a trailer, or semi-tractor and trailer, you will need a USDOT number, register for the Unified Carrier Regsitration (UCR) process, and register with the state of Texas for a Texas DOT certificate, commonly referred to as Texas DOT number
  • For-Hire Carriers hauling items, products, loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with loads and weighing 10,000-lbs or less: Texas DOT number not required. If you are For-Hire and haul items, products, loads within the state of Texas, and across state lines with a van, pickup truck, or pickup truck and trailer with a GVWR of 10,000-lbs or less with a power unit, or with a power unit and trailer with CGWR of 10,000-lbs or less, you will need to register for a USDOT number and Federal MC Authority, but not for the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) process as you will be 10,000-lbs or under. You will also not need to register with the state of Texas for a Texas DOT certificate, commonly known as Texas DOT number.
  • For-Hire Carriers hauling products, loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with loads and weighing between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs: Texas DOT not required. If you are a For-Hire carrier with a pickup truck, pickup truck and trailer, straight truck, straight truck and trailer where the power unit has a gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 10,000-lbs or under, but the Combined Gross Vehicle Weitht Ratings of both the power vehicle and trailer are between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs, you are required to register for a USDOT number and Federal MC Authority, but not for the Unified Carrier Registration as the power unit has a GVWR of 10,000-lbs or under. You will not be required to register with the state of Texas for a Texas DOT Certificate, commonly refered to as Texas DOT number.
  • For-Hire Carriers hauling products, loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with loads and weighing between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs: Texas DOT number not required. If you are a For-Hire Carrier with a pickup truck, pickup truck and trailer, straight truck, straight truck and trailer with a GVWR of 10,001-lbs or more for a single unit, or with the Combined Gross Vehicle Weith Ratings (CGWR) of 10,001-lbs or more for the power unit and trailer and you will be hauling loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with loads, you are required to register for a USDOT number and for Federal MC Authority and for the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) process. You will not be required to register with the state of Texas for a Texas DOT certificate, commonly referred to as Texas DOT number.
  • For-Hire Carrier hauling products, loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with loads and weighing 26,001-lbs or more: Texas DOT number required. If you are a For-Hire Carrier with a straight truck, straight truck and trailer, or semi-tractor and trailer and haul loads within the state of Texas, and haul loads across state lines, and have a GVWR of 26,001-lbs or more with a power unit, or CGWR of 26,001-lbs or greater with a power unit and trailer, you will need to register for a USDOT number, Federal MC Authority, the Unified Carrier Registration (UCR) process, and with the state of Texas for a Texas DOT certificate, commonly known as State of Texas DOT number.

Insurance Requirements:

  • Insurance Requirements - Non Hazardous - Remaining in Texas:  If you are going to haul loads within the state of Texas without crossing state lines with a vehicle weighing 26,001-lbs or more, you will be required to carry a minimum of $500,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance when applying for Texas DOT number.
  • Insurance Requirements - Hazardous - Remaining in Texas:  If you are going to haul hazardous loads within the state of Texas without crossing state lines, you will be required to carry between $1 million and $5 million in liability insurance when applying for Texas DOT number, depending on the type of hazardous product being transported.
  • Insurance Requirements - Non Hazardous - Crossing State Lines - 10,000-lbs or under: Texas DOT number not requiredbut you will need Federal MC Authority to cross state lines as a For-Hire Carrier.  You will be required to carry a minimum of $300,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage, and a minimum of $5,000 in cargo insurance for Common Authority. 
  • Insurance Requirements - Hazardous - Crossing State Lines - Any Weight: Texas DOT number is required. Hauling hazardous loads within the state of Texas and crossing state lines as a For-Hire Carrier requires between $1 million and $5 million depending on the type of hazardous loads being hauled.

Tow Trucks: 

  • Tow Trucks / Gross Vehcle Weight Rating of 26,000-lbs or under:  Texas DOT number required. If you are going to operate a tow truck within the state of Texas, you will need to register for Texas DOT number regardless of the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. You will be required to carry $300,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance, and $50,000 in Cargo Insurance if you are going to conduct non-consent tows.
  • Tow Trucks / Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 26,001-lbs or more:  Texas DOT number is required. If you are going to operate a tow truck within the state of Texas with a Gross Vehicle weight Rating of 26,001-lbs or heavier, you will need to register for Texas DOT number. You will be required to carry a minimum of $500,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage liablity insurance, and $50,000 in Cargo Insurance if you are going to conduct non-consent tow 

Passenger Vehicles / Motor Coaches:

  • Passenger Vehicles / Seating Capacity > 15 Including Driver: Texas DOT number not required. Passenger vehicles with a seating capacity up to 14 passengers and 1 driver transporting passengers inside Texas are not required to register with the state.
  • Passenger Vehicles / Motor Coaches / Seating Capacity 16 - 26 Including Driver: Texas DOT number required. If you are going to operate a passenger vehicle designed or used to transport 15 or more passengers plus the driver, (Seating 15 passengers + driver = 16) within the state of Texas, you are required to register for Texas DOT number and carry a minimum of $500,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance. USDOT number is required.
  • Passenger Vehicles / Motor Coaches / Seating Capacity 27+ Including Driver:  Texas DOT number required. If you are going to operate a passenger vehicle designed to transport 26 or more passengers plus a driver within the state of Texas, you are required to register for Texas DOT number and carry a minimum of $5 million in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance. USDOT number required

Fuel Permits:

  • Fuel Permits: If you will be operating a vehicle plated at 26,001-lbs or more within the state of Texas, in addition to registering for Texas DOT number and having a USDOT number, you will need to register for a Texas fuel permit

  • IFTA Fuel Tax Registration: If you will be operating within the state of Texas with Texas DOT number and hauling loads across state lines with a vehicle plated at 26,001-lbs or more, you will not need a Texas fuel permit, but will need to register for IFTA fuel tax.

Excemptions:  Texas DOT number not required. Certain carriers are not required to register with the Texas Department of Transportation for the Texas DOT number:

  • Farm vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of under 48,000-lbs
  • Cotton vehicle registered under the Texas Transportation Code (TRC) 502.277
  • Vehicle registered with the Texas Railroad Commission under the Texas Natural Resources Code 113.131 and 116.072
  • Vehicle used to transport liquor under a Private Carrier Permit issued under Alcoholic Beverage Code Chapter 42
  • Vehicle used to transport passengers and operated by an entity whose primary function is not to transport passengers, such as a vehicle operated by a hotel, day care center, nursing home, etc.
  • Vehicle operated by a governmental entity

Texas DOT number for Commercial Vehicles:   When you haul items, products, commodities, loads or equipment  within the state of Texas without crossing state lines  with a van, van and trailer, pickup truck, pickup truck and trailer, large truck, large truck and trailer or with a semi-tractor and trailer, you may be required to register for a Texas DOT number. If you are a Private Carrier transporting your own items, products, loads or equipment; or a For-Hire Carrier, Motor Coach operator or use a tow truck, check the listings below to see if you are required to register for Texas DOT number. There are requirements for transporting goods within the state of Texas with Texas DOT, and also  additional requirements for crossing state lines, both empty and loaded that, in addition to a Texas DOT number for in-state travel, you may also need MC Authority and register for UCR - Unified Carrier Registration for crossing state lines. Private Carriers - Transporting Hazardous Materials - Texas DOT number requirements:   Private Carriers or Companies carrying or transporting Hazardous Materials belonging to the Carrier or Company owning the vehicle or vehicles - Texas DOT number requirements: Also, Private Carriers or Companies transporting Hazardous Materials across state lines - Texas DOT, USDOT and Unified Carrier Registration requirements:

  • Texas DOT number requirements for transporting Hazardous Materials within the state of Texas and not crossing state lines in a van or pickup truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,000-lbs or less, or with a van or pickup truck and trailer with Gross Combined Weight Ratings (GCWR) of 10,000-lbs or less for both the power unit and trailer, Texas DOT is required if placarding is required.
  • Texas DOT number requirements for transporting Hazardous Materials within the state of Texas and not crossing state lines in a van, pickup truck or truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs, or with a van, pickup truck or truck and trailer with Gross Combined Weight Ratings (GCWR) between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs for both the power unit and the trailer, Texas DOT number is required if placarding is required.

  • Texas DOT number requirements for transporting Hazardous Materials within the state of Texas and transporting Hazardous Materials across state lines in a van or pickup truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 10,000-lbs or less, or in a van or pickup truck and trailer with Gross Combined Weight Ratings (GCWR) of 10,000-lbs or less for both the power unit and trailer, Texas DOT number is required where placarding is required.
