DOT Texas: When you haul items, products or loads inside Texas without crossing state lines with these loads with a truck, truck and trailer, or semi-tractor and trailer, you may be required to register with the state for a Texas DOT Certificate. This Texas DOT Certificate is also known as DOT Texas.

  • Private Carriers hauling their own products within the state of Texas with vehicles up to 26,000-lbs:  DOT Texas is not required.  As a Private Carrier with a van, pickup truck, pickup truck and trailer, or a straight truck, or straight truck pulling a trailer, with either a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000-lbs or under for the power unit, or with the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings (CGVWR) of 26,000-lbs or under for both the power unit and trailer, and you haul products or loads exclusively within the state of Texas without leaving the state, You are not required to register for a USDOT number, or for a DOT Texas Certificate, also refered to as DOT Texas.
  • Private Carriers hauling their own products within the state of Texas with vehicles 26,001-lbs and heavier:  DOT Texas required. As a Private Carrier with a straight truck, straight truck and trailer, or with a semi-tractor and trailer with either a GVWR of 26,001-lbs or greater for the power unit, or with a CGVWR of 26,001-lbs or greater for both the power unit and trailer, and you haul loads within the state of Texas without crossing state lines with these loads, you are required to register for a USDOT number and with the state for a DOT Texas Certificate, commonly refered to as DOT Texas
  • For-Hire Carriers hauling products or loads within the state of Texas with vehicles up to 26,000-lbs: DOT Texas required. If you are For-Hire and get paid to haul loads inside the state of Texas without crossing state lines with these loads, and you are moving these items, products or loads with a van, pickup truck, pickup truck pulling a trailer, straight truck, straight truck pulling a trailer, and with a GVWR of 26,000-lbs or under with the power unit, or CGVWR of 26,000-lbs or under with both the power unit and trailer, you are not required to register for a USDOT number or for the DOT Texas Certificate, commonly refered to as DOT Texas.
  • For-Hire Carriers hauling loads within the state of Texas with vehicles 26,001-lbs or heavier:  DOT Texas is required.  If you are For-Hire and get paid to haul loads inside the state of Texas without crossing state lines with these loads and you are using a straight truck, straight truck and trailer, or a semi-tractor and trailer where the GVWR is 26,001-lbs or more with the power unit, or the CGVWR is 26,001-lbs or more with a power unit and trailer, you are required to register for a USDOT number and with the state of Texas for a DOT Texas Certificate, commonly known as DOT Texas.
  • Privatge Carriers hauling their own items, products or loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with items, products or loads and weighing 10,000-lbs or less: DOT Texas is not required.  As a Private Carrier with a van, pickup truck, pickup truck and trailer, straight truck, straight truck and trailer with a GVWR of 10,000-lbs or under, or with a CGVWR of 10,000-lbs or under for both the power unit and trailer hauling items, products or loads withing the state of Texas and crossing state lines with items, products or loads, you do not need a USDOT number. You will also not need to register with the state of Texas for a DOT Texas Certificate, commonly refered to as DOT Texas.
  • Private Carriers hauling their own items, products or loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with items, products or loads, and weighing between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs / Power Unit 10,000-lbs or under: DOT Texas is not required. If you are a Private Carrier hauling your own items, products or loads within the state of Texas, and also crossing state lines with items, products or loads where the power unit has a GVWR of 10,000-lbs or under, but the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings of both the power unit and the trailer are between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs, you will need to register for a USDOT number but not for the Unified Carrier Registration as your power unit is 10,000-lbs or under. You will also not need to register for a DOT Texas Certificate, commonly refered to as DOT Texas. You will not need an IRP license plate nor register for IFTA fuel tax.
  • Private Carriers hauling their own items, products or loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with items, products or loads, and weighing between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs / Power Unit 10,001-lbs or heavier: DOT Texas is not required. If you are a Private Carrier hauling your own items, products or loads within the state of Texas, and also crossing state lines with items, products or loads where the power unit has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 10,001-lbs or more and the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings of both the power unit and the trailer are between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs, you will need a USDOT number and register for the Unified Carrier Registration as the power vehicle is 10,001-lbs or greater. But you will not need to register for a DOT Texas Certificate, commonly refered to as DOT Texas. You will also not need an IRP license plate nor to register for IFTA fuel tax.
  • Private Carriers hauling their own products within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with their own products / 3-axle truck 26,000-lbs or under: DOT Texas is not required. If you have a 3-axle truck by itself with a GVWR at 26,000-lbs or under, or pulling a trailer where the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings of both the power unit and the 3-axle truck are 26,000-lbs or under - You will need a USDOT number, register for the Unified Carrier Registration, apply for an IRP license plate (3-axle trucks crossing state lines are required to be plated with an IRP license plate regardless of weight) and register for IFTA fuel tax. You not need to register for a DOT Texas Certificate, commonly refered to as DOT Texas.
  • Private Carriers hauling their own products within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with their own products, and weighing 26,001-lbs or more: DOT Texas is required. If you are a Private Carrier with a straight truck, straight truck and trailer or semi-tractor and trailer weighing 26,001-lbs or more, you will need a USDOT number and register for the Unified Carrier Registration. You will also need to get an IRP license plate for the power unit and register for IFTA fuel tax. You will also need to register for a DOT Texas Certificate, commonly refered to as DOT Texas.
  • For-Hire Carriers hauling items, products or loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with items, products or loads and weighing 10,000-lbs or under: DOT Texas is not required. If you are For-Hire and haul items, products or loads within the state of Texas, and cross state lines with items, products or loads with a van, pickup truck, or pickup truck and trailer with a GVWR of 10,000-lbs or under for the power unit, or CGVWR of both the power unit and trailer, you will need a USDOT number and register for Federal Motor Carrier Authority. You will not need to register for the Unified Carrier Registration nor get an IRP license plate nor register for IFTA fuel tax. Again, a DOT Texas CertificateDOT Texas is not required.
  • For-Hire Carriers hauling loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with loads, and weighing 10,001-lbs - 26,000lbs / Power Unit 10,000-lbs or under: DOT Texas is not required. If you are For-Hire and haul loads within the state of Texas, and cross state lines with loads and weigh 10,001-lbs - 26,000-lbs with a GVWR of 10,000-lbs or under for the power unit, but the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings of both the power unit and trailer are between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs - you will need to register for a USDOT number and for Federal Motor Carrier Authority, but not for the Unified Carrier Registration as the power unit is 10,000-lbs or under.  You will not need an IRP license plate nor register for IFTA fuel tax. You will not need to register for a DOT Texas Certificate, commonly refered to as DOT Texas.

If you are For-Hire and haul loads within the state of Texas, and cross state lines with loads with a truck or a truck and trailer and weigh 10,001-lbs - 26,000-lbs with a GVWR of 10,001-lbs or heavier for the power unit and the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings of both the power unit and trailer are between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs - you will need to register for a USDOT number and for Federal Motor Carrier Authority. You will also need to register for the Unified Carrier Registration as the power unit is 10,001-lbs or more. You will not need an IRP license plate nor register for IFTA fuel tax. You will not need to register for a DOT Texas Certificate, commonly refered to as DOT Texas.
  • For-Hire Carriers hauling loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with loads, and weighing 26,000-lbs or under / 3-axle truck 26,000-lbs or under: DOT Texas is not required. If you are For-Hire and haul loads within the state of Texas, and cross state lines with loads with a 3-axle truck with a GVWR of 26,000-lbs or under, or a 3-axle truck pulling a trailer with Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings of 26,000-lbs or under for both the truck and trailer - you are required to register for a USDOT number and Federal Motor Carrier Authority as well as the Unified Carrier registration. You are also required to have an IRP license plate and register for IFTA fuel tax (3-axle trucks are required to have IRP plates when crossing state lines, regardless of weight). You will not need to register for a DOT Texas Certificate, commonly referred to as DOT Texas.  
  • For-Hire Carriers hauling loads within the state of Texas, and crossing state lines with loads, and weighing 26,001-lbs or heavier: DOT Texas is required. If you are For-Hire and haul loads within the state of Texas, and cross state lines with loads with a truck, truck and trailer or semi-tractor and trailer and weigh 26,001-lbs or more - you will need to register for a USDOT number and for Federal Motor Carrier Authority. You will also need to register for the Unified Carrier Registration. You will need an IRP license plate and register for IFTA fuel tax. You will also need to register for a DOT Texas Certificate, commonly refered to as DOT Texas.

Insurance Requirements - For-Hire Carrier - Non Hazardous - Remaining in Texas - with the Application for a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas: If you are going to haul loads within the state of Texas without crossing state lines, you will be required to carry a minimum of $500,000 in Personal Injury / Propery Damage liability insurance when applying for a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas.

Insurance Requirements - For-Hire Carrier - Hazardous Loads - Remaining in Texas - with the Application for a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas: If you are going to haul hazardous loads within the state of Texas without crossing state lines, you will be required to carry between $1 million and $5 million in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance when applying for a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas, depending on the type of hazardous product being transported.

Insurance Requirements - For-Hire Carrier - Non-Hazardous - Crossing State Lines - 10,000-lbs or under: DOT Texas is not required, but you will need Federal Motor Carrier Authority to cross state lines as a For-Hire Carrier. You will be required to carry a minimum of $300,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance, and a minimum of $5,000 for Common Authority. Again, DOT Texas is not required.

Hauling Loads For-Hire Across State lines / 10,000-lbs or under: DOT Texas is not required. If you are going to haul loads inside the state of Texas and transport loads across state lines, in addition to the DOT Texas requirements you may need, you will need to register for a USDOT number and Federal Motor Carrier Authority but not for the Unified Carrier Registration. If the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the van or pickup truck transporting loads across state lines is 10,000-lbs or under, or the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings (CGVWR) of both the power unit and trailer it is pulling do not exceed 10,000-lbs, you will need a minimum of $300,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance. You will not need to register for the Unified Carrier Registration and you will not need to get an IRP license plate nor register for IFTA fuel tax. DOT Texas is not required.

Hauling Loads For-Hire Across State Lines / 10,001-lbs - 26,000-lbs / Power Unit 10,000-lbs or under: DOT Texas is not required. If the GVWR of the power unit is 10,000-lbs or under, but the Combined Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings of both the power unit and the trailer are between 10,001-lbs and 26,000-lbs, you will need to register for a USDOT number and for Federal Motor Carrier Authority. You will need to carry a minimum of $750,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance. You will not need to register for the Unified Carrier Registration as the power unit is 10,000-lbs or under. You will also not need to get an IRP license plate nor register for IFTA fuel tax. DOT Texas is not required.

Hauling Loads For-Hire Across State Lines / 10,001-lbs - 26,000-lbs / Power Unit 10,001-lbs or heavier: DOT Texas is not required. You will need to register for a USDOT number and for Federal Motor Carrier Authority. You will need a minimum of $750,000-lbs in Personal Injury / Property Damage liablity insurance. You will need to register for the Unified Carrier Registration but you will not need an IRP license plate nor register for IFTA fuel tax. DOT Texas is not required.

Hauling Loads For-Hire Across State Lines / 3-axle Truck 26,000-lbs or under: DOT Texas is not required for hauling loads in-state. You will need to register for a USDOT number and for Federal Motor Carrier Authority. You will need a minimum of $750,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance. You will need to register for the Unified Carrier Registration and, with a 3-axle truck by itself or pulling a trailer, you will need to obtain an IRP license plate and register for IFTA fuel tax. Again, DOT Texas is not required.

Hauling Loads Across State Lines / 26,001-lbs and above: DOT Texas is required to haul loads in-state. You will need a USDOT number and register for Federal Motor Carrier Authority and carry a minimum of $750,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance. You will need to register for the Unified Carrier Registration, get an IRP license plate for the power unit and register for IFTA fuel tax. Again, you will need to register for a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas to haul loads in-state.

Tow Trucks / Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 26,000-lbs or Under: DOT Texas is required.  If you are going to operate a tow truck within the state of Texas, you will need to register for a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas.  You will be required to carry a minimum of $300,000 in Personal Injury / Propery Damage liability insurance, and $50,000 in Cargo Insurance if you are going to conduct non-consent tows.

Tow Trucks / Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 26,001-lbs and above: DOT Texas is required. If you are going to operate a tow truck in the state of Texas with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 26,001-lbs or above, you will need to register for a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas. You will be required to carry a minimum of $500,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance, and $50,000 in Cargo Insurance if you are going to conduct non-consent tows.

Passenger Vehicles / Motor Coaches / Seating capacity 16 - 26 including Driver: DOT Texas is required. If you are going to operate a passenger vehicle designed or used to transport 15 or more passengers plus the driver - up to 25 passengers plus the driver within the state of Texas, you are required to register for a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas and carry a minimum of $500,000 in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance. Again, DOT Texas is required.

Passenger Vehicles / Motor Coaches / Seating Capacity 27+ Including Driver: DOT Texas is required. If you are going to operate a passenger vehicle designed to transport 26 or more passengers plus a driver within the state of Texas, you are required to register for a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas and carry a minimum of $5 million in Personal Injury / Property Damage liability insurance.

Fuel Permits: If you will be operating a vehicle plated at 26,001-lbs or more within the state of Texas, in addition to registering for a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas, you will need to register for a Texas fuel permit.

IFTA Fuel Tax Registration: If you will be operating within the state of Texas with a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas and hauling loads across state lines with a vehicle plated at 26,001lbs or higher, you will not need a Texas fuel permit, but you will need to register for IFTA fuel tax.

Exemptions: DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas is not required. Certain carriers are not required to register with the Texas Department of Transportation for a DOT Texas Certificate / DOT Texas.

  • Farm vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of under 48,000-lbs
  • Cotton vehicle registered under the Texas Transportation Code (TRC) 502.277
  • Vehicle registered with the Texas Railroad Commission under the Texas Natural Resources Code 113.131 and 116.072
  • Vehicle used to transport liquor under a Private Carrier Permit issued under the Alcoholic Beverage Code Chapter 42
  • Vehicle used to transport passengers and operated by an entity whose primary function is not to trnasport passengersw, such as a vehicle operated by a hotel, day care center, nursing home, etc.
  • Vehicle operated by a governmental entity
